Lon started with Swenson, Hagen & Company as a part-time draftsman in 1969 while attending Bismarck State College and North Dakota State University (NDSU). He transitioned to full-time employment when he graduated from NDSU in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In April 1978, Lon became a partner in the firm and progressed to President/Managing Partner in 1999.
With over thirty years of civil engineering experience, Lon has cultivated an array of design skills. His favorite aspects of design are site planning, closely followed by subdivision design and project management. Lon’s thorough experience in site grading, water, sewer, and storm sewer design, and his knowledge of concrete, asphalt, landscaping, and irrigation make him an important asset to any site design team.
Experience has taught Lon that you can truly never “know it all.” To provide your clients with the best possible design solutions, continuing education is vital to staying on the cutting edge of technology. This drives Lon to continue to evolve as a professional while remaining confident with the wealth of knowledge he brings to any project.
Lon is driven to provide the company’s clients with a commitment to understanding their goals and to provide practical options. His decision-making skills and attention to detail are the result of years of experience in design and project management. Being involved with projects from conceptualization through project management has provided Lon with a wide-breadth of knowledge to draw from when providing professional services.
Lon is described as a workaholic, but he does have a life outside of Swenson, Hagen & Company. He enjoys sailing, skiing, scuba diving, and golfing. His wife Jen joins him in the water, but finds him too competitive to enjoy golfing with him.
